A multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation conducted across Mpumalanga has resulted in the arrest of 240 undocumented immigrants, along with numerous suspects linked to serious and priority crimes.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), Operation Shanela II was carried out between 25 and 28 June 2026 in collaboration with various government departments and law enforcement agencies. The operation focused on immigration-related offences, cross-border crime, and other criminal activities across the province.

In addition to the immigration-related arrests, police arrested suspects for offences including murder, rape, assault, illegal liquor trading, drug-related crimes, driving under the influence, possession of explosives, and firearm-related offences. Several wanted suspects linked to priority crimes were also traced and taken into custody.

The operation included high-visibility patrols, roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, searches of people, vehicles and premises, as well as inspections of businesses, farms, mines and liquor outlets. Authorities also closed several unlicensed liquor premises.

During the operation, law enforcement officials recovered illicit drugs, firearms, explosive components, counterfeit goods, illegal cigarettes, copper cables and precious metals. SAPS has commended all participating departments and law enforcement partners for their coordinated efforts, saying Operation Shanela II continues to enhance law enforcement visibility and improve public safety across Mpumalanga.
