Four people lost their lives and another was injured in a single-vehicle crash on the R577 between Roossenekal and Mashishing (formerly Lydenburg) on Saturday morning, 18 July.

According to the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, the crash occurred at approximately 07:00 when the driver of a Volkswagen light motor vehicle allegedly lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn. The driver and three passengers died at the scene, while a fifth occupant sustained injuries.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, expressed concern over the continued loss of life on the province's roads.

“We cannot allow road deaths to become so frequent when most of these incidents are avoidable. All that is required is responsible driver behaviour to end this mayhem and make our roads safer. We all need to obey the rules,” he said.

The MEC also conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured passenger a speedy recovery.
