Mpumalanga police arrested 787 suspects during the latest intelligence-driven Operation Shanela 2, conducted across the province between Friday, 24 July and Sunday, 26 July.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), 58 of those arrested were charged with contravening the Immigration Act. Police also arrested 50 suspects for the possession of drugs and another 50 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The operation also led to the arrest of 40 suspects who were wanted for serious and violent crimes. In addition, police confiscated hundreds of litres of alcohol and shut down several liquor outlets found to be operating illegally.

Other arrests were made for offences including murder, attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of explosives.

SAPS said Operation Shanela 2 will continue across all districts in Mpumalanga as part of ongoing efforts to combat crime and improve public safety. All suspects are expected to appear in various magistrates' courts across the province on Monday, 27 July.
