Since 1 July 2026, eight municipal areas in Mpumalanga have been implementing the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act (AARTO).
These are the City of Mbombela, Nkomazi, Thaba Chweu, Steve Tshwete, Emalahleni, Thembisile Hani, Govan Mbeki and Lekwa municipal areas.
Traffic authorities in these areas now issue AARTO infringement notices instead of Section 56 or Section 341 notices. However, motorists must still settle notices issued under the Criminal Procedure Act before 1 July 2026.
What motorists need to know
After receiving an AARTO infringement notice, motorists have 32 days to:
- Pay the penalty and qualify for a 50% discount.
- Nominate the person who was driving when the offence occurred.
- Apply to pay the penalty in instalments if it amounts to R750 or more.
- Lodge an appeal with the Appeals Tribunal. If still dissatisfied after completing the available processes, elect to take the matter to court.
Failure to respond may lead to additional fees and an enforcement order, which could prevent motorists from renewing their driving or vehicle licences or registering a new vehicle.
