A truck driver was arrested after police discovered approximately 630kg of suspected dagga at the Oshoek Port of Entry between Eswatini and South Africa.

The discovery was made at about 01:30 on Monday, 17 August, while officers were searching vehicles arriving from Eswatini. Police allegedly found 49 bags of suspected dagga inside a Volvo truck. The consignment has an estimated street value of more than R4 million.

The truck and trailer, which displayed Eswatini registration plates and reportedly belonged to an Eswatini-based logistics company, were also seized. The suspect is expected to appear in court on a charge of dealing in dagga.

Police investigations are continuing to establish the origin and intended destination of the consignment and determine whether other people were involved.

Mpumalanga SAPS provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Nkakoane Aphania Modise welcomed the arrest, saying intensified operations at border posts remained crucial in combating cross-border crime.
