Msukaligwa Local Municipality has warned residents that burning grass, garden waste or rubbish without prior approval from the Fire Service is illegal and could result in fines or additional charges.
In a notice issued on 30 October 2026, the municipality stated that property owners who violate the regulations could face fines of up to R5 000, as well as liability for fire service call-out costs if emergency services are dispatched.
Key Regulations
The municipality reminded residents of the following requirements:
- Open burning: Burning leaves, garden refuse, paper, wood or rubbish in yards or on vacant land is prohibited without approval.
- Vegetation management: Grass in urban areas must be maintained at a maximum height of 150 mm to reduce fire hazards.
- Waste disposal: Garden waste and rubbish must be taken to an official municipal waste disposal site.
The municipality also reminded registered agricultural property owners that controlled burns require prior approval, with at least seven days' notice.
