Hoërskool Ermelo’s athletics team delivered a strong showing this past weekend at Hoërskool Nelspruit, competing against some of the region’s toughest schools, including Hoërskool Nelspruit, Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies), Affies Meisies and Rob Ferreira. The Erries athletes rose to the challenge, producing several podium finishes across track and field events.
In the junior girls’ categories, the o.14 and o.15 athletes set the tone early. Milan Zwarts claimed third place in the 1500m, while Denicke van Zyl finished second in the long jump. Megan Herbst stood out in the o.15 division with a first-place finish in the long jump, supported by podium performances from Margolé Marx, Marizé Cilliers and Inge Prinsloo across sprinting, middle-distance and high jump events.
The o.16 girls produced one of the strongest collective performances of the day. Liané Cilliers secured multiple podium finishes, including a first place in the long jump and second places in the 800m and 1500m. Additional top-three results came from Lizé van der Merwe, Carla Burgers and Julie Uys in the field events. In the o.17 and o.19 girls’ divisions, Telisa Olivier and Marlioné Erasmus continued the medal run with consistent performances in sprints and hurdles.
On the boys’ side, Tafadzwa Cithande delivered an outstanding performance by winning the o.17 110m hurdles, while Mnqobi Mabuza claimed second place in both the 1500m and 3000m. In the senior boys’ category, Luan Greyling dominated the 400m with a first-place finish and added another podium result in the 800m. Solid contributions from WJ Pretorius and HJ Hobkirk rounded off a successful outing for the Erries.
The performances in Nelspruit reflect the depth and determination within Hoërskool Ermelo’s athletics programme, with athletes competing confidently against top-level opposition and proudly representing their school on the regional stage.
