Three young athletes from the Ermelo Karate Academy are set to showcase their skills on an international platform at the Commonwealth Karate Championships in Durban, running from 28 November to 1 December. Siblings Chibuzo and Chinedu Okpugo, both 14, and 15-year-old Lesedi Twala, have spent nearly a decade training under the guidance of Sensei Eugene Smith, culminating in this significant opportunity.

“These students have demonstrated exceptional dedication and perseverance,” remarked Sensei Eugene. “Their journey reflects the true essence of karate—personal growth, resilience, and unwavering discipline.”

The academy, renowned for producing top-tier karate practitioners, celebrates a milestone as Lesedi prepares to test for his Shodan (1st Dan) black belt on 2 December. This achievement will mark him as the tenth black belt from the academy and the second under Sensei Eugene’s mentorship. Meanwhile, Chibuzo and Chinedu are poised to attain their 1st Kyu brown belts, positioning them for black belt advancement next year.

Renshi Brando Pillay, a distinguished instructor and Technical Convener for Karate South Africa, will oversee their grading. As a World Karate Federation-certified coach in both kata and kumite, Renshi Pillay brings a wealth of expertise to the evaluation process.

Their participation in the championships highlights their personal achievements and underscores the dedication and quality of training at the Ermelo Karate Academy. These young athletes inspire others, demonstrating that with commitment and hard work, remarkable accomplishments are within reach.
