Ermelo’s karate community is celebrating the remarkable rise of brothers Chinedu Okpugo and Chibuzo Okpugo, two young athletes whose performances have steadily placed the town on South Africa’s competitive karate map. Both represent Ermelo Karate Academy, competing under the banners of the Mpumalanga Karate Association and Karate South Africa (KSA), and have built reputations as disciplined, consistent performers at provincial, national and international level.

Chinedu Okpugo has delivered a string of strong results over the past two seasons, including representing South Africa at the Commonwealth Karate Championships, podium finishes at provincial and national championships, and multiple medals at KSA League events. His progress has seen him rise to third in South Africa in the Elite Cadet Boys Kumite (14/15 years, under 70kg), a reflection of years of steady development, resilience and competitive maturity .

Chibuzo Okpugo’s achievements have been equally impressive, marked by frequent podium finishes at major events and international exposure. He has competed for South Africa at the Commonwealth Championships, represented the country at continental level under the Union of African Karate Federations (UFAK), earned Protea Colours, and currently holds the number one ranking in South Africa in the Elite Cadet Boys Kumite (14/15 years, under 70kg). His results underline a level of excellence rarely seen from athletes so young .
Both brothers are now preparing for their biggest challenge yet — the Karate One Youth League Fujairah, taking place in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, from 12 to 15 February 2026. The WKF-sanctioned event is one of the most prestigious youth karate tournaments in the world, drawing over 2200 elite competitors from across the globe. Their selection to represent South Africa at this level is a significant milestone, not only for the athletes themselves, but for Ermelo, Gert Sibande District and Mpumalanga, marking a first for the local karate scene to have athletes competing at such a high-profile international platform.
While their achievements highlight what is possible through dedication and community-based sport, the journey comes with challenges. Karate receives limited direct support from government structures, including the Department of Sport, meaning that the financial burden of international competition rests largely on the families of the athletes. Members of the community who wish to support the brothers’ journey are encouraged to contact their instructor, Sensei Eugene Smith, on 072 361 6680, and play a part in helping Ermelo’s karate talent shine on the world stage.
