Two young athletes from Laerskool JJ van der Merwe brought pride to Ermelo after outstanding performances at the South African Primary Schools Athletics Championships held in Cape Town from 19 to 21 March 2026.

Siyamthanda Khumalo was crowned national champion in the under-11 boys long jump, securing first place and a gold medal. According to a statement from the Mpumalanga Department of Education, he
“owned the runway and dominated the sandpit,”
proving himself the best in the country in his category.

Joining him in representing Laerskool JJ van der Merwe with distinction, Mianke Theron achieved a podium finish in the under-13 girls 200m hurdles, claiming third place. Her performance earned her a bronze medal, placing her among the country’s top young athletes.
The Mpumalanga Department of Education congratulated both athletes, noting that their performances inspire a new generation to aim higher and pursue excellence in sport.
