Two police officers attached to the South African Police Service in Bethal were arrested on Wednesday, 06 May 2026, on charges relating to alleged corruption and extortion.

According to a media statement issued by the Office of the Provincial Commissioner in Mpumalanga, the suspects — a Sergeant and a Constable from Bethal Police Station — were arrested during an intelligence-driven operation conducted by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit.

It is alleged that the officers demanded money from a local businessman in January 2025 after he failed to produce a licence for operating a hair salon. The officers allegedly took cash from the businessman and indicated they would return for more money. The matter was reportedly brought to the attention of a member of the Community Policing Forum (CPF), who escalated it to a senior SAPS member, leading to an investigation.

The two suspects are expected to appear before the Bethal Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 07 May 2026, facing charges of corruption and extortion.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, welcomed the arrests and said the alleged conduct undermines the oath taken by police officers to serve and protect communities. He added that SAPS would continue rooting out corruption within its ranks without fear or favour.

The SAPS reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on corruption, adding that further arrests cannot be ruled out as investigations continue.
