Motorists travelling across Mpumalanga this weekend are being urged to exercise extra caution as traffic volumes are expected to increase ahead of the reopening of schools next week.

In a media statement issued on Friday, July 17, Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie called on all road users to obey the rules of the road, remain alert and ensure vehicles are road worthy.

"Let us all prioritise safety this weekend and beyond. Let us all play our part to preserve lives by travelling safely. Do not drive when you are tired. Rather take a break every two hours or every 200 km of driving," he said.

Traffic law enforcement officers are expected to maintain a visible presence on major routes across the province, including the N2, N3, N4, N11, N12, N17, R23, R38, R573 and R36. Motorists have also been warned to exercise extreme caution when travelling in misty conditions, especially on the N11 between Ermelo and Volksrust, the N4 near Belfast and Machadodorp, and the N12 through Emalahleni, Delmas and Ogies.

The MEC also called on traffic law enforcement officers not to tolerate any wrongdoing, but to bring offenders to book without hesitation.

Authorities have urged everyone to play their part in making the province's roads safer, reminding motorists that every responsible decision on the road could help save a life.
