The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) has urged residents to remain vigilant as rising temperatures bring increased snake activity across the province.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, the agency warned that snakes become more active during spring and summer and may be encountered in residential areas, gardens and outdoor spaces.

The MTPA advised residents to take the following precautions:

  • Avoid approaching, provoking or attempting to kill snakes.
  • Keep yards clean and remove rubbish or materials that could provide shelter.
  • Exercise caution when walking through tall grass.
  • Contact trained snake handlers when encountering a snake.
  • If bitten, seek immediate medical attention. Do not cut the wound, attempt to suck out venom or apply a tourniquet.

The agency also reminded residents that snakes play an important role in maintaining ecological balance and should be treated with caution.

Residents requiring assistance with snake removal can contact MTPA snake catcher Chris Hobkirk on 082 372 3350.
